"The Mountaintop" by Katori Hall is a re-imagining of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s last night on earth. It is set in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis in 1968. In this fictional account, an exhausted Dr. King, who has just delivered one of his most memorable speeches, retires to his room with a request of coffee from the motel while a storm rages outside. The mysterious motel maid delivers the coffee and surprising news, forcing Dr. King to confront his destiny and legacy.
